John Golding - updated
It is with deepest sadness that I inform you all that our dear friend and team mate John Golding passed away on Thursday 22nd February at Basingstoke Hospital. He was 78.

John was the sort of man for whom everyone had good words. Kind, Fair, Great player, Good company, sense of humour, a true gentleman. I could go on.

John was a sportsman, he loved watching and playing football as a young man, though his days of watching Reading in these last few seasons had been a trial for him, he loyally cheered them on.

John was born in Bramley and played football for Tadley in his youth.

He stayed in the area all his life, worked at Lansing Bagnall in the Pay Branch, married, had 2 sons and 2 grandchildren all of whom he adored along with his daughter in law and loving sister. They were his main love.

John married fairly young and enjoyed over 50 years of a very happy marriage with Sheila his late much beloved wife.

Most of you reading this will know that John was a formidable Table Tennis player. I believe he was number 4 in the Basingstoke area in the 60s. Back then we had numerous leagues and players so it was quite an achievement to reach the dizzy heights of the top ten. He will be remembered as a player who defended brilliantly and disheartened his opponents by returning all their best shots.

He played almost continuously in both the Reading and Newbury leagues, returning to the Basingstoke league when he joined Oakley and then Wanderers around 6 years ago. We enjoyed many a drink together after our matches. The standard was not that of his best days but always fun and good natured.

He was a keen and very good cricketer, played for local teams, became a member of Hampshire County Cricket for years and was a very good local umpire.

He loved horse racing and enjoyed days out with his family and friends to the races.

John was also a very good bowler, he was a member at Loddon Vale indoor bowls club and Howard Park outside club. As always he made very many friends and was much loved and respected at both clubs.

R.I.P our dearest friend you will be forever missed by those of us that loved you.

John's funeral will be held at Basingstoke Crematorium 25/Mar/2024 at 11:00.
