Summer League
May 10th, 2012

Message from Patrick Garlick:
Just as the league season has drawn to a close, for those of you who don't stuff your TT bag in the cupboard for the summer we are again running a summer league in Basingstoke for 2012 after the overwhelming success of last years competition.

This will be held on Monday nights for 10 weeks at The Sports Hall, Aldworth Science College, Western Way, Basingstoke, RG22 6HA

7:30pm-9:30pm from 18th June-20th August.

The summer league is open to any player of any standard whether they are Basingstoke league members or not. Please see the attached documents which fully explain the format of the summer league.

The deadline for team registration forms is Saturday 9th June

For those of you who like to just have the occasional practice over the summer there will be plenty of practice tables available every week alongside the league matches. The cost for practice sessions is £2 per person per night (£3 for non-Basingstoke league members) which is considerably cheaper than the cost of hiring the Essex Road table tennis centre for the evening. Whether you want to bring your team-mates for a practice or simply turn up on your own for a knock, there will always be tables and players available.

There is also a bar on site which will be open after matches/practice

For further details, Please click here or go the Summer League page from the main menu.

Team Handicap - Final
May 3rd, 2012

St. Peters 'A' 427 - 410 Queens 'B'

Message from Tom Speed:
In an exciting match played in a friendly and sporting manner, the Queens B side of Sav Thevendria, Peter Howell and Paritosh Singh just failed to wrest the trophy from the holders who last season played as St Peters B.

From the start the St Peters team of Sean Pickin, Peter Matthews and James Wright made predictable inroads into their 140 point deficit and by game 8 this was down to six points. Peter Howel then steadied the Queens ship with an impressive display against Pete Matthews so that the scores were level going into the final game.

However Sean proved too strong for Paritosh, who battled hard to the very end but to no avail and
St Peters ran out winners by 427 to 410.

Congratulations to both teams for providing an entertaining evening.

Message from Patrick Garlick:

First of all thanks to everybody who entered, helped out and umpired matches at the Tees Sport Basingstoke Closed championships yesterday. A total of 51 players competed in 13 events in over 250 matches!

Finals Night is this Tuesday 24th April at the Basingstoke Rugby Club. The venue will be open from 6:30pm for players to knock up and spectators to arrive. The bar will be open throughout the night. Please come and support your local league and its members in what is always a fantastic night of table tennis whether you are playing, supporting your team and club-mates or just a neutral spectator.

If you missed out on any table tennis rubbers/blades/clothing/equipment from the Tees Sport sales stand on Saturday and are interested in purchasing any new or clearance stock then please speak to Alex Garlick on the night.

Closed Championship - Entries close in 2 weeks!
April 3rd, 2012

Please click here for entry form.

This year's Closed Championship looks like it's going to be a real humdinger! With 25 entries already received, many players appear to be running into good form with the end of season approaching. Although Sean Pickin and Sander de Riemer have been almost unstoppable this season, there a number of players who, on their day, are capable of lifting the Men's Singles crown. The young guns in Div 2 will prove a match for any of the established BDTTL players, with the Queens trio of Callum Coombs, Ryan Ng and Dominic Ng showing superb form in recent weeks. Celia Hooker will be looking to retain her Ladies Singles title, with Sarah Whithorn eager to go one better after narrowly losing out in last year's final

Time is running out! get your entries in ASAP!

Hampshire Closed - Results
February 15th, 2012

Basingstoke were well represented at the Hampshire Championships on Sunday 11th March. Sarah Whitehorn, Celia Hooker, Norman Swift, Patrick Garlick and Jonathan Evans all played well. Sarah came away with the Veterans Women’s title, and Jonathan Evans won the Intermediate Men’s title (Under 23). Jonathan played four 5-setters on his way to the victory in the Intermediate Singles title. He was up against very stiff competition. He beat last year’s winner, Ross Saxby in the Group round, taking his revenge for Ross’s win in the 2011 final against Jonathan, who was runner up last year. Jonathan later put up a tremendous fight against Edwin Slot in the Semi’s winning in the 5th. In the final, he was up against another very experienced player, Billy Ho, and again it went to 5 sets, with Jonathan running out the winner 11-8 in the fifth. Jonathan also got to the quarter finals in the Men’s singles, where he lost 11-9 in the fifth (by now he was really exhausted after all those five setters), and to the quarter finals in the Men’s Doubles with Edwin Slot as his partner.

Coaching is thriving!
March 4th, 2012

The Webmaster attended the coaching session yesterday at Aldworth and it was fantastic to see so many players, both junior and senior taking part. 14 tables were in full use, with Terry White, Patrick Garlick and the team doing a great job providing coaching to many useful looking players......if some of these progress to league table tennis over the next few years, BDTTL will be in a very healthy position! Special mention to Peter Coppins who does a FAB job recording and collecting all the weekly subs from the players, a very important role, as well as passing on some coaching tips. Please click here for details for coaching at Aldworth.

Finished with your table tennis rubbers?
March 4th, 2012

If anyone has any table tennis rubbers that are no longer used, for example, if you have recently replaced your table tennis rubbers and the old ones are just sitting around in the bottom of your kit bag, then Terry White at coaching would be very keen to receive these. He can then make these available to the juniors at coaching by adding them to some of the spare coaching blades, so there is a decent supply of table tennis equipment available at coaching

Closed Championship - Entry Forms
March 2nd, 2012

Please click here for entry form.

This tournament is open to ALL registered league members regardless of how many matches they have played this season

Last year saw a fantastic entry of over 50 players for the senior and junior tournaments combined and it is expected there will be a further increase this year. With 13 events there is something for everybody of all standards.

Notable changes to this year's championships are:

  • Entry forms are being returned to Patrick - NOT Sue (these will be handed to her after the closing date so she can make the draws etc)
  • Removal of the minibat Singles to make way for the Handicap Doubles (After much feedback it was felt this would be a more popular event)
  • Return of the Ladies Doubles (with at least 15 ladies registered in the league it was felt there will be sufficient entry this year)
  • Return of the Division 3 Singles
  • Open Singles and Open Doubles have reverted back to being Men's events. (There are now enough ladies to have seperate events)
  • Junior events will take place on a seperate day (however there are 19 registered league juniors who can enter the senior events)
  • Payment is now per-event rather than a flat fee and can be made by cash or cheque either with the entry form (preferred) or on the day.

QMC reach national finals of the English Schools Championship
March 2nd, 2012

Message from Patrick Garlick:
The Queens Mary's College under 19 girls team have qualified for the national finals of the English Schools table tennis championships thanks to a runners up finish in the regional finals in Cheltenham last weekend.

The team which included BDTTL up and coming junior Zoe Blagbrough, defeated Simon Balle School (Hertfordshire) 7-1 and although they lost 8-0 to Wembley High Technology College (London) they progressed to the national finals to be held in Leicester on Saturday 24th March.

The QMC girls are relatively inexperienced with Zoe being the only league player, but their strength in depth has been far superior to most of their opponents which has seen them now crowned Basingstoke, Hampshire and also South East champions as well as Southern runners up.

This is a fantastic achievement considering no Hampshire school team of any age group has been past the regional finals in many years.

Hampshire Closed - further details
February 15th, 2012

The Hampshire Senior Closed will be held at the Waterside Table Tennis Centre in Totton, Southampton on Sunday 11th March. This is a fantastic venue with 12 top quality tables and flooring and even international standard lighting. The Basingstoke league has sent a very poor number of entries over the last few years so it would be great to have as many players as possible enter this year. The standard varies from the equivalent of bottom div 2 in Basingstoke to higher than top div 1.

View from the Web
November 5th, 2011

This season is already hotting up and there are many good things to note from the matches played so far. Firstly it's great to see some new names performing well, plus the welcome rteturn of a few names returning to BDTTL after a break. Also, thanks to everyone for making the effort to add comments to the scorecards as well as sending out match details so promptly. It really does help the webmaster keep everything as up to date as possible. In Div 1 it looks like St Peters A are still the team to beat but there are plenty of players out there who I think can put up a strong challenge.  In Div 2 Minitec B have made a fast start, but it looks like an experienced AWE 'A' are likely to provide stern opposition. In the newly formed Div 3, Aldworth and Basingstoke Hindu Society are the front runners, although I'm hearing great reports of some of the newcomers to BDTTL, particularly the juniors.
The Averages will be on-line after the completion of Week 8, so if you could all make an extra special effort this week to send me through results, it would be very much appreciated.

Handicap Singles Competition
October 30th, 2011

Message from Patrick Garlick:
We will be holding a handicap singles competition at Essex Road (both rooms) on Wednesday 16th November starting at 7:30pm open to all league members and others if I am notified prior to the night. There is no need to enter beforehand. Players can just turn up on the night but must be present by 7:15pm. After this time all players will be put into groups and it might not be possible to squeeze in any late entries. The entry fee (paid on the night) will be £3 and refreshments will be provided. Essex Road will be open from 7pm for knocking up. These competitions have been very well attended over the past few years so expect plenty of games against many different players, most of whom will be from different divisions.

  • All players will be divided into 4 groups at the start of the night and each group will be played on 1 table (2 tables in each room).
  • Every player will receive a number of "base points" based on how they compare to everybody in their group. Obviously if you are in a group with lots of players better than you then you will receive a lot more base points.
  • Everybody in that group will play each other 1 game up to 21 from "love-all" and all points gained throughout all your matches in the group will be added to your base points to give you a total score. There are no deuces so a match at 20-20 will finish 21-20.
  • The top 2 players from each group will go through to the Quarter finals where a random draw and a similar format will progress to the final. In the event of a tie for group positions, all tied players will progress to the knockout round and preliminary matches will be played.
  • Trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner up

Although it is not necessary to enter beforehand it would be a great help if you could let me know if you intend to enter just so that I can prepare for a general number of entries

Scorecard challenge!
October 19th, 2011

Here's a challenge for you all! Please try and make at least ONE comment on every match scorecard; facts, details, humour, interest, ridiculous....absolutely anything goes! It will help to make the job of Press Officer Brenda Bavister just a little bit easier if she has got something to write about other than just scores.

Also, it would be really helpful if a bit more care could be taken when completing the scorecards. In particular; clear writing of player names and making sure doubles players names are included.

VERY MANY THANKS!

RAF Odiham withdrawn from the 1st Division
October 10th, 2011

Message from Registration Secretary, Ron Powell:
Please note that RAF Odiham has had to withdraw their team in the 1st division this season. It is a sad loss to the league, as they were a very good sporting side. It was unfortunate but unavoidable with the situation at the Base at present.
Please make a note of the fixture list as the fixture will now become a bye.
One or two of their remaining players are still interested in playing in the 1st Division
with another team, and in particular Simon Clark, and Andrew Pipe.
If any team is interested please contact them or let me know.
