Hello,
It’s been a while….I hope you have not
been too disappointed that you have not seen an issue of Net’s ‘N Edges
this season…very busy and all that…anyway instead of the normal chapter
and verse I have limited this to a summary as we are and comments on the
comments that are written on the green card. Really most people now have
a computer or access to one so looking on our great website is the way
forward for information. Anyone who has a team mate without an email
address print it off will you.
Summary
As of mid Feb 2005 the leagues are
looking great….Div One is a battle between St Peters "A" and Queens "A"
who have whittled away at St Peters lead , so now standing at just 9
points with the teams to meet this week. It is going to be fire.
In Division 2 it looks like RAF Odiham
have made the charge for the line opening up a 14 point gap over Oakley
"A". ..Barnacle , Edbrooke and Pipe…..a great strong team and well
capable of competing in the top flight. Hannington "C" although bottom
have competed very well in every game when I look at the score cards.
In Division 3 it is going to be anyone of
3 KG "C" the Lions or Oakley "B"…only a few points separating all 3..my
money is on the Lions returning to Div 2 as champions if they get
ruthless!
I feel as though this year is an
enjoyable year with some freshness in it but shame about the number of
matches played with only 2 players……
Comments on the Green Cards…keep
them coming…bold is the comment on the card!
Every one mentioned below…in Divisional
order
Division Three
Sean it’s cold in here... Brass monkeys
in fact. KG C obviously referring to the
climatic lows in Essex Road…….it is what makes us what we are chaps!!…a
cold night down Essex Road….however due to the wanton use of a term such
as "brass monkeys" I though I would look this one up…..
It has often been claimed that the "brass
monkey" was a holder or storage rack in which cannon balls (or shot)
were stacked on a ship. Supposedly when the "monkey" with its stack of
cannon ball became cold, the contraction of iron cannon balls led to the
balls falling through or off of the "monkey." ……this
could also lead onto the term…”freezing
your balls off!
The first recorded use of the term "brass
monkey" appears to dates to 1857 when it was used in a book stating "It
would freeze the tail off a brass monkey."
………..
Was Essex Road TT centre around before
1857 …..if
so we could change history..
I found the above by doing a search on
the internet …the
search engine first came back with www.brassmonkeys.com which is a site
specializing in men's underwear with attitude and style with a smile……….
This is rather apt as when it is brass monkeys down Essex Road I always
play pants.
Mick Ogles great fightback from a 0-11
loss in first game to just being "pipped at the post" in the 5th
game…v Charlie Smith….ummm pipped at the post
The Oxford English Dictionary
has under "pip v(3)" definition 1c
c. To anticipate or forestall (someone)
in a particular activity, circumstance, etc.
to pip at (or on) the post, to defeat by a narrow margin at the last
moment;
Nip and Tuck KG
C’s comments. Very close so that the advantage or lead of competitors
keeps shifting, as in It was nip and tuck whether they would deal
with the bill before Congress adjourned. The precise allusion in
this term has been lost. [Early 1800s] Also see neck and neck.
Another season.. not a great start "The
Alligator in Shakespeare and practising for a new thespian career …
referring to KG "C" I am not going to bring up
anything to do with The Alligator anymore…humour has it’s day…yeah there
thou makes me sad and make me sin…(Henry IV part I)
Well played Oakley.. first game EVER for
any of the RAF Odiham B players The only way is up….
Somebody with a pun on the green card…RAF ..the only way is up… I get
it…..
Tight cheerful match with in form George
Hellans playing well for his max
The Smiths too full of Christmas pud…
The Smiths getting their just desserts from
Hellans…and went home singing Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now… I hope you
get what I mean..
Sean.. hope you have finished stuffing
the turkey.. happy new year..
Sorry about the lost green card in Dec..
will try not to lose any in 2nd half
KG C again..
Fill in a card….put it in your bag…get
home…take card out of bag…put stamp on card…walk to post box …put green
card in post box..
The 2 youngsters played well…..played in
the right sprit…. …no not referring to Ron
Cleave and George Hellans…this was Queens E….Referring to Matthew
Palaczky and and Louis Webb .Good to see some youth in the league….
Terri playing out of her skin……referring
to Terri Allison’s performance v RAF
Ron played out of his skin…….Ron
Cleave 2 v AWE…must have been watching Terri.
Peter should have beat me- I was very
lucky Graham Quinn honest in his narrow win
over Peter Watkins….luck evens itself out over the season….unless you
are very lucky.
There has been a plague of flies not
locusts at Essex rd……KG C reporting of an
environmental issue at Essex Road….I was thinking what would happen if
during a point a fly disturbed a player so am making him lose the
point…..I am not sure…I will swat up on the rules….oh dear…
Ware should now be suspended for
disobeying captains instructions and turning up in wrong colour
shirt…the 2 Dave’s were in yellow,……… I too
get behind in my washing…..perhaps if the team issues shirts in a home
colour and away colour and the team play Minitec in their bright orange
then we could expect a colourful evening. St Peters once had team shirts
but after a year or two none of us good fit into them…..the arguments
were…….was it poor washing, poor quality or weight gain.
It’s good to be back Sean…..
heart warming comments from Phil Ware of KG. Just make sure you wear the
correct shirt and do not lose the match cards and all will be fine.
Phil Ware just putting one over on Dave
Smith in final game…Ware winning 3 straight in
a clash of 2 forces in Div 3
Should be a close fought division
……. Early comments on the cars from KG v Lions…..and they were
right…could be anyone of 3 and only 5 points separate Lions KG and
Oakley B at the time of writing this.
A very good and exciting match which has
made the top order in the league v close…KG 7-3 v Lions…Ware
3 to make it one point difference between the 2 teams at the top….as
commented on above
Peter has improved since last year…Oakley
B commenting on Peter Watkins and these comments reflect on the good
performance Peter has had this year.
A very good and exciting match which has
made the top order in the league v close…KG
7-3 v Lions…Ware 3 to make it one point difference….nail biting stuff!
Whole match played in friendly yet
competitive spirit…Queens E v RAF….get an edge
and say sorry
Others …
Excellent evenings TT with the final
score not really reflecting the number of close games.
Marcus Burton had a clean sweep…
Language a bit colourful…RAF
v Queens D
Division Two
Super sub Dave!
Fairclough No ….Partridge gets a max in Div 2 v Hann C……Dave and Phil
Ware Div2 next year?
John Edrooke welcomed back to the league
after a spell to Wycombe, Iraq and Oz…..one
may stray to other locations in search of something better but everyone
knows that Basingstoke Town IS the place to be…everyone’s talking
about it…tell everyone you meet….big up Basingstoke.
A clash of styles across the teams .
Minitec in their "orange" number and were the
RAF wearing sunglasses.
Even with 2 left handers Odiham couldn’t
overturn Minitec…would this game have gone
ahead in medieval times……I too am left handed (honestly)….but play with
my right…..just to give others a chance (just kidding)… I think left
handers in any sport look more natural…..Phil Mickelson…Tony
Palaczky…Ryan Giggs….Tony ..look I put you in between two greats….well
one ….
Excellent night and Ashley actually broke
into a sweat….treble v Hann B….did somebody
run in saying that the world wide web had gone down.
A long night…..Oak
A v RAF in match that saw 6 games go to 5 sets…lights out late at Oakley
village hall…what will the neighbours say…who ever said up to 11 takes
an hour off an evenings TT
Steve Morris exceptionally unlucky not to
win any games…v Odiham. TT is not a lottery
…you have to deceive , be fraudulent and ruthless…..there is no luck in
table tennis..
Sorry for late card……..KG
B …..it’s OK…..at least I got one (KG "C")
Others..
The match could have been drawn , however
RAF Odiham remain unbeaten – so far with Andy Pipe winning all 3 with
usual help of net at crucial times…..RAF v
Queens
Ferguson won 2 probably playing his best
to date…Andy from the RAF...v Queens.. good to
see the improvement
Division One
A result at last!... a close call though
….Amies treble brilliant….K.G.A beat Hann A.. Amies beats Brown
….KG "A" happy with some success…and KC star Tony
Amies shining.
Mills made Cummins really sweat! Another
good performance from Mr Mills.. did he say
the price of beer is going down?
Tim Pang played really well and was
unlucky not to beat Wilkes in 4 after being ahead.
..good to see a new face in the league and here nearly took the scalp of
one of it’s greats...
My team mates let me down ….Honest
comments from Pete Matthews who is on a roll and his talented colleagues
cannot keep up…..I will come good Pete!..
Another Mills masterclass!
3 v KG . Dave Mills playing great TT in Div 1 and even got some great
headlines in the Gazette as a result of this….
George White hit everything and young
Alan Gustar was the 5 set specialist .Good competitive evening.
Hann A v Minitec….was George in a strop and went around slapping
everything in sight ..or was this when he was trying to get to a ball at
Minitec. ( PS great venue…lots of clubs have expressed how good it is).
+ Gus getting his moneys worth and teasing the opposition and then
applying the killer blow.
the rumble in the jungle….
Matthews v Palaczky….11-9 in 5 to Pete.. Pete was floating like a
butterfly and stung like a bee in this big clash.. Tony took it on the
chin.
Hannington blow all new years resolutions
in the first game:…no chocolate... no beer…no
speeding…no winning...10-0 loss to A Hill
Max up to the Garlick and White…3’s
for Alex and Stuart in 9-1 over Minitec. ..street talk (which I don’t
understand…max up?) ..anyway….big up for the chilled out Alex and Stuart
who gave it large ..
Cheers, Sean |
