ETTA membership numbers June 14th, 2011 Message from Barbara Evans, BDTTL Secretary: Remember you registered with the ETTA back at the beginning of the season? Well, I am pleased to say that I have now received the ETTA membership numbers for Basingstoke League members. I am still waiting for the official membership cards, which should be sent to me by ETTA 'soon'. The membership number will stay with you indefinitely, so although it is too late for this season, it will be useful when you register next season, which I hope you will do. I have sent notification of your ETTA membership number via e-mail to those people whose address I have. I will bring a written notice for everyone else to the AGM on 23rd June, so you can pick it up from me there. Those people who registered via another league should receive their membership number from that League, although I can supply it if necessary. Those people who registered directly with ETTA should have their membership number already; again if you do not, then let me know and I will supply it. If you have an e-mail address and have not received your number from me, please e-mail me at barbara_evans@mentor.com and I will send your number to you. Apologies for the delay in getting the membership numbers to you; this was due to the delays at the ETTA processing all of the membership data, which was a formidable task. Summer League - 2 more entries June 14th, 2011 All at Sea - 2 new players from coaching, Jan MacDonald and Linda Dumont are hoping to sail through the Summer League. No team name as yet, so I'm suggesting an anagram of their names: SNOWMAN EBB........sounds pretty cool! 3 further teams are expected to register this week, so looking like at least 12 teams so far, a fantastic response! Have a great summer everyone and see you all back in September when we will hopefully do it all over again! Hants Inter Town & Vets May 9th, 2011 Message from Peter Martin: Report on Hants Inter Town Tournament held at Andover on May 7th 2011 In the Mens Division Basingstoke were represented by Sean Pickin, James Wright and Patrick Garlick. Bournemouth fielded a particularly strong team and ran out 5 1 victors over Basingstoke in the first match with Sean winning the only game. This was followed by a 5 1 victory over Andover A. Both Sean and James won two matches and Patrick one. The last match was against Portsmouth A and Basingstoke again ran out 5 1 winners to finish second in their group. Again both Sean and James won two matches and Patrick one. A very creditable performance by all the team. In the Vets A Division Basingstoke A were represented by Peter Matthews, Norman Swift, Peter Martin and Sarah Whithorn. Both matches against Bournemouth A and Bournemouth B were won 5 1. Norman, Sarah and Peter Martin won all their singles matches. Norman and Sarah remained unbeaten in the mixed doubles. This was a repeat of last years win in the division. In the Vets Division B Basingstoke B fielded Tony Brown, Keith Dickenson, George White and Celia Hooker. The first match against Andover B was won by the score of 4 2. The second match was won also by the score of 4 2 against a strong Andover A side with George and Keith winning the decisive doubles. Tony won both his singles matches and with Celia both doubles matches. Another division win for Basingstoke. In Vets Division C Basingstoke were represented by Roger Bielby, Ron Powell, Robin Burns and Terri Alison. First up were another strong Bournemouth side and Basingstoke were well beaten 5 1. Roger won his singles match. This score line was repeated in the match against Andover where Terri Allison gained the only success. The tournament was held in a super venue at Andover and everyone enjoyed the days play. Basingstoke teams were worthy winners of the Vets 1 and Vets 2 divisions. My thanks go to all the players who represented Basingstoke and I hope you all enjoyed the competition. End of Season TT get together May 9th, 2011 Message from Sean Pickin: Thought it would be good to mark the seasons end with a get together. If you would like to be involved in some good loose TT chat then this is the time and venue; Maybe it is a convenient time for your team to go out together. Our St Peters teams will be there. Such items of discuss are; Who is always late to TT and never puts the tables up Who is the luckiest player Who is the worst umpire who is best dressed Who eats all the biscuits Who is going to the Olympics Who buys the drinks after TT....maybe this is a time to make amends Saturday 11th June, 7.30p.m for 8p.m. at http://www.whitehartinn.net/ London Rd RG21 4AE....the pub opposite the Police station in the great Basingstoken Town. Chosen as central (so a taxi home), its been refurbished, not a town pub, and if any of you get out of order then the Police station is just opposite. See you there AGM - 2010 May 5th, 2011 Thursday 23rd June 2011 Basingstoke Rugby Club, Pack Lane, Kempshott commencing 7.30pm. End of Season Report - 2010/11 from the Registration Secretary May 5th, 2011 Many thanks to Ron Powell, Registration Secretary, for providing the following End of Season Report: Division 1. Congratulations go to St Peters A as champions for the 6th successive year. The team did not lose a match and won the title by a large margin. Runners up are Winklebury which are well worthy of 2nd place, they regularly end in the top three each season. Alpha Cars were well placed in 3rd position. Relegation positions are Queens A and lastly St Peters B. Division 2. Congratulations go to Division 2 champions KG C. This division was much tighter at the top of the league, but this young team had a great run of form at the end of the season and just edged out Oakley A. Oakley A looked favourite for most of the season, but ended just 2 points behind in 2nd place. Both teams are well worthy of promotion to the top tier. Queens C are well placed in 3rd position. Propping up the league are Hindu Society and congratulations to them for completing their fixtures and winning a match. Concerns. It was very disappointing that so many points were conceded this season, and particularly so many matches were conceded. This has affected the league positions for some teams and quite probably the relegation positions at the bottom of the 1st division. The majority of conceded points were in the 1st division, and most of the matches were conceded by one club. The club has contacted the committee and has assured that this will not happen again next season. Positives. It was very exciting to see all the really good junior players coming through the different teams this season. They all play a modern attacking game which is great to watch and a great credit to the coaching team. I thought the final of Division 2 Singles at the championships, was the best for many years. These juniors will be a good asset to the 1st division. We were very fortunate for Brenda Bavister to step forward this year to volunteer as Press Officer. Brenda has done a great job in her own unique way of writing, and has given many entertaining articles over the season. We were also very fortunate for Sue Tompsett to agree to run the Basingstoke Championships tournament. Sue did a fantastic job and the tournament was a great success. These two positions are very important to the league and a lot of work is involved. Well done to Brenda, and Sue. Hope to see you all in the near future at the AGM . Kind Regards Ron Powell Registration Secretary Handicap Cup Final - Result Hannington 375 - 429 St Peters 'B' Basingstoke's top team of Sean Pickin, Pete Matthews and James Wright, masquerading as St Peters B, added the Handicap cup to their Division 1 title, beating the Hannington team of Steve Rollason, Tony Brown and Paul Robinson. This enjoyable game was an all action affair with both sides adopting an attacking approach, but Hannington were never quite able to match the firepower of St Peters who ran out comfortable winners. Message from Ken Wyld, AWE May 4th, 2011 "Bert Foster, a stalwart of AWE Table Tennis Club, died on 17th April aged 80. He played for AWE in the 50's , 60's & 70's in the Basingstoke & Newbury Leagues & was one of the top players of that era. He lived in Reading & also played in the Reading league. He won the Basingstoke Singles title several times. I'm pretty sure he also won the men's doubles & mixed doubles titles. Also I think he won the Berks. Men's Singles. His wife Eva & daughter Denise also played". However if any club or individual feels that the rule (or indeed any other rule) should be amended, then any proposed amendment should be submitted in writing to The League Secretary, Barbara Evans, by 1 May, so that it may be debated at the AGM. Mens Semi Final 1 -Sean Pickin bt James Wright 3-0 (Repeat of last years semi final, Sean was untroubled) Mens Semi Final 2 - Peter Matthews bt Matthew Wilson 3-0 (Matthew came close to taking a set with some good attacking play) Minibat Final - Sav Thevendria bt Patrick Garlick 2-1 (best of 3 sets. A difficult match with 1/4 size bats. Full of simple errors and the odd loop! Highlight was a spectator trying to catch the ball and in the process - spilling his beer all over the lap of the person next to him!!) Handicap Final - Patrick Garlick (+5) bt Peter Matthews 31-25 (Patrick pulled ahead to 29-15 before Peter almost made a great comeback) 18-40's Final - James Wright bt Patrick Garlick 3-0 (James was always in control. Made light work of things with some fantastic retreiving of Patricks attacking play) Veterans Final - Peter Matthews bt Sean Pickin 3-2 (very high quality game, exciting and full of attacking play. Blocking and counter attacking by Peter was exceptional. Sean's 1st defeat of the season in league/closed champs combined) Super Veterans Final - Peter Matthews bt Peter Martin 3-0 (Peter Matthews was already warmed up from his last match and had a comfortable victory. Peter Martin came close in the 3rd set) Mixed Doubles Final - Sean Pickin/Terri Allison bt Patrick Garlick/Sue Tompsett 3-0 (Reigning champions were untroubled. Sean was just too good and attacked at every opportunity) Open Doubles Final - Sean Pickin/Peter Matthews bt James Wright/Sav Thevendria 3-0 (Top seeds were untroubled throughout the whole competition and never looked like losing) Div 2 Final - Jamie Cole beat Matthew Wilson 3-2 (most entertaining of the night, Jamie was unseeded and beat top seed Matthew. Lots of attacking rallies back from the table. Jamie came back from 2-1 down) Div 1 Final - Peter Martin bt Patrick Garlick 3-1 (Patrick's 5th match of the night - very tired! Peter's consistant defence was too good and he also managed to win almost every rally he opened up) Ladies Singles Final - Celia Hooker bt Sarah Whithorn 3-2 (Celia's first ever Basingstoke title in her first final. Very patient pushing game and almost always managed to attack the right ball) Open Singles Final - Sean Pickin bt Peter Matthews 3-1 (Reigning champion Sean's attacking was better than in the veterans final and he didnt allow Peter to open up the game first. Sean now has 3 singles titles including the last 2)

Please contact Terri Allison (01256 781905) or George White to enter either individually or as a team:
Barth Syndrome is a very rare genetic disorder that affects males. Those affected suffer from weak and ailing hearts, weak immune system, extreme fatigue, weak muscles and growth delay. With the money raised from events such as quizzes, the Trust has been able to take great strides in raising awareness of Barth, most importantly in the medical profession. We now have a dedicated clinic in Bristol, where doctors are becoming the 'experts' in this field. We still send money to the States where there is an ongoing programme in genetic research to hopefully find a cure.

This year's event has been organised again by Tom Speed, who has put a lot of effort into making the Handicap Cup a success. Jonathan Evans wins the Hampshire Schools Under 19 Boys Championship November 16th, 2010
Jonathan Evans of Cliddesden won the Under 19 Boys Hampshire Schools Championship on Thursday 11th November; he was representing Peter Symonds College in Winchester, where he is studying for AS level GCEs in Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Geography and General Studies. Fresh from his treble against Queens A on Tuesday evening, Jonathan, who plays for Minitec B in Division 1 of the Basingstoke League, was in fine form. The first round was played as a round robin, and Jonathan comfortably won against Lee Dobson, Kelvin Ora and Bethany Wells, only dropping one set to Bethany. The final was played as a triple group, with three players battling it out for the Championship. Tom Chamberlain beat Keiran Wells, then lost to Jonathan 11-5, 11-9, 11-5. Jonathans match against Keiran Wells was very exciting, with Jonathan running out the winner 12-10, 11-7, 16-14. Jonathan will now go on to represent Hampshire Schools in the English Schools final in April 2011. This will be the sixth year out of seven that Jonathan has represented Hampshire at the English Schools finals, having won the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 16 events in previous years.
A superb performance by Jonathan, many congratulations from all in the BDTTL, very best of luck in the English Schools final next year.

Closed Championship - a brief look back March 21st, 2010
What a day it was! Superb table tennis, a great community spirit and a fantastic array of cakes! Thanks to everyone for playing their part in making it a very successful and very enjoyable day. There were some very generous donations for the raffle, which along with the entrance fees and money from the refreshments means that we easily covered the cost of hiring the Aldworth Sports Hall (£250) and the Rugby Club for Finals Night (£30). Make a date in your diaries for Thursday night, there are some hotly anticipated matches with the best players in Basingstoke going head to head for the 10 titles available.
In the Junior Singles Final, highly rated Div 1 rising star, Louis Webb won a closely contested match against the rapidly improving Jamie Cole. Jamie took the first set with some confident attacking table tennis, but the experience Louis has gained from playing in Div 1 this season started to kick-in, taking control of the match and winning the next 3 sets. Let's hope it's not too long before we see Jamie and some of the other up and coming juniors competing in the BDTTL Div1.
In the Junior Doubles, Louis Webb teamed up with Matthew Palaczky to win in 4 very close sets against Jamie Cole and Tristan Noon. Both junior finals provided great entertainment to the spectators, who appreciated a superb exhibition of table tennis. All juniors competing yesterday should be congratulated, not just for their table tennis skills but also for the way they all conducted themselves and for their great sportsmanship.
The Super Veterans title was won by Nigel Cooper, defeating Terry White by the closest possible margin. Terry won the first set 12-10, before Nigel stormed back to win the last 2 sets 11-9, 11-9. It was good to see a strong entry in the Super Veterans this year. It was particularly pleasing to see Louis Palaczky competing again, with Ron Powell, Robin Burns and Bill Bavister all providing good opposition.
The schedule for Finals Night will be published here on the web on Monday evening.

This is really a message for anyone viewing the BDTTL website who would like to play table tennis, but think that it is only a young person's sport! You're wrong, we have a many players in BDTTL who are aged 50+ and enjoy playing table tennis. If your are interested in either taking up table tennis or perhaps looking at returning to table tennis after some years away from the sport, you would be most welcome to play in the BDTTL.

Hampshire Schools Championship - Great performances! February 1st, 2010
Report from Barbara Evans:
The Hampshire Schools Championships took place at Waterside Table Tennis Centre in Totton on Friday 29th January. Basingstoke had a good entry in the Championships, with three players making it to the finals of their age categories. Jonathan Evans won the Under 16 Boys event, and will now represent Hampshire at the English Schools event in April. Jonathan had not played competitively since before Christmas, due to snow and revising for GCSEs, so he did very well to win the event without dropping a game. Sisters Zoe and Amy Blagbrough both fought well to make it through to the finals of the Under 16 and Under 11 girls events. Zoe was unlucky to meet the England International, Tressa Armitage in her final, and Amy was also defeated in hers by a more experienced player. Altogether it was a very good result for Basingstoke.

Postponements and Rule 42 January 24th, 2010
At the last meeting of the BDTTL, Postponements and Rule 20 were discussed. The decision was to adhere to this rule in the current 2009/10 season, i.e. 42 days means 42 consecutive days, irrespective of whether there is an intervening Xmas break or free week. However, as a result of the recent adverse weather, George White, Chairman, has issued the following statement: "The 42 day rule should not apply in cases where there are postponements caused by exceptional weather conditions. However I would expect teams to try and re-arrange asap although they will not be penalised if the match takes place after 42 days."
The committee would like to open a debate via the web about any views on future amendments to rule 42 for next season, in particular whether the 42 days should exclude 'Free Weeks' for Team Handicap matches and/or the Christmas period.
Please send any comments to the webmaster: email the Webmaster: basingstokett@hotmail.co.uk
Coaching dates January 22nd, 2010
Please note Saturday morning coaching will NOT take place on 20th February and 13th March as the Aldworth Sports Hall has been pre-booked by other users.

Webmaster Xmas Shoot-Out: Results December 30th, 2009
A big thank-you to the 20 players who braved a cold night and took part in the 3rd annual Webmaster Xmas Shoot-Out at Essex Road on Tuesday evening. £62 was raised by your generosity and this more than covers the costs of keeping the website registered and serviced by our Service Provide, Streamline. After a combination of both singles and doubles matches, the top 4 players competed in the semi-finals, with Roger Bielby defeating Patrick Garlick and Peter Martin just edging out Norman Swift. Peter went on to beat Roger in the final and claim the title of Webmaster Xmas Shoot-Out champion for 2009! I was particularly pleased to see everyone stay to watch the final which added to the competitive yet friendly atmosphere. Hopefully a lot of fun was had by all and look forward to Xmas Shoot-Out in 2010!

I am hoping to run the 3rd Webmaster Xmas Shoot-Out, between Christmas and New Year on Tuesday 29th December, Essex Road, from 7.30pm.
The aim is to raise funds to cover the costs of the website, currently approx £50 for two years to keep our website name registered + the cost paid to our web host provider (Streamline.net). An entry fee of £3 per player will be requested on the night to contribute towards these costs. During the last few months Tom has been working on a redesign of the BDTTL website and we are aiming to have this available for viewing on the night!

Closed Championship - Open Singles - Preview March 6th, 2009
Can the mighty Steve Murgatroyd retain his crown? Will Sean Pickin maintain his blistering form this season and challenge for the title? Is Peter Matthews going to regain the top prize?
This year's Open Singles is going to be one of the most hotly contested for years. With the majestic Tony Palaczky in superb form and the awesome fire-power of Norman Swift, it's difficult to predict who is going to end up as Basingstoke's No. 1 player. Louis Conlon has picked up some big scalps in Div 1 and is highly regarded as a big threat. The crafty Paul Rattue can't be ruled either, nor can the experience of Terry White be ignored - both capable of beating the very best on their day.
Only 3 weeks to go and as you can see, the anticipation is building!

BDTTL Closed Championship 2008/09 - Finals Night - new venue February 28th, 2009
Message from the Webmaster: As most of you will be aware, after many successful years the Closed Championship Finals Night can no longer be held at the Cannon Social Club. However, I am pleased to confirm that Finals Night this season will be played at the Basingstoke Rugby Club.
After an extensive search for a suitable and viable venue, the Rugby Club has now been booked for Tuesday 31st March from 7pm. The facilities include a bar and also a snack bar where drink and food can be purchased by players and spectators.
I am really hoping for a bumper number of entries into the Championship this year. With ever increasing costs (Aldworth College = £217, Rugby Club = £30) it is very important that BDTTL try and recoup this money and the best way to do this is to show your support by entering the Championship - player entry fees are Seniors £5, Juniors £3.
So go on, don't delay, enter right away! It's easy, Entry Forms are available on the web and can be emailed to me or sent by post. Alternatively, simply email me the events you would like to enter (basingstokett@hotmail.co.uk) or just give me a call (Bas. 476708).
Finals Night will be a terrific event in a great new venue, with some exciting table tennis guaranteed! Even if you can't make the Championship on the Saturday, make a date in your diary for Finals Night, spectators most welcome!

Congratulations to Patrick Garlick for winning the Webmaster Xmas Shoot-Out. 13 players braved a freezing night at Essex Road to compete in the 2nd ever Xmas Shoot-Out, last years inaugural event won by Terry White. It will also mean that the FORUM will temporarily not work, but I hope to get this resolved soon.
