Press Report #10
Wednesday 2nd December 2009

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, Queens B started off on the right foot as Andy Walker powered his way to a tremendous win over Winklebury’s Colin Wilkes in five very tight games. However, in the next match Queens’ Peter Martin had to retire after injuring a knee after losing his first two games against John Golding. Walker continued as he had started, by overwhelming first Golding and then Dave Wise with an awesome display of attacking flair. Queens Keith Dickenson also managed to pick up two points, beating both Golding and Wise to give a final score of 5-5.

The KG B team of Roger Bielby, Phil Ware and Duncan Sibbeck came unstuck when they hosted a Hannington side of Steve Rollason, Peter Henderson and Andrew Stephens. Despite some heroic attempts, the home side couldn’t manage to close out any matches until the final match of the evening when the two team captains clashed, with Bielby just managing to salvage a single point for his team.

A familiar result for Oakley A this week – this time losing 10-0 to Minitec B. Minitec’s Norman Swift and Louis Conlon had relatively straightforward wins in all of their matches, while Gary Livingstone had to work overtime to equal the successes of his team mates being forced to go the distance against Oakley’s Jason White and Dave Smith, but still picked up all three points available to him thanks to his resilient defensive play.

In Division 2, AWE paid the price for turning out against Basingstoke Hindu Society A without their star player John McLarty, losing 0-10 in what the team admitted was a complete white wash. There was a brief resistance by AWE’s Steve Jones early in the match, but this was soon put down and the away side finished the match with almost indecent haste.

A local derby between KG D and KG E saw the E side adding another success to their winning streak as they finished up 3-7 winners. KG E’s Steve Ng recorded a fine treble thanks largely to some unfathomable serving that had the home side perplexed. Peter Millie also notched up a treble and teamed up with Ng to win the doubles too.

After a disappointing start to their first season in the league, Basingstoke Hindu Society B team seems to be starting to find their way. Although they lost to Queens E by 2 games to 8, the result could have been different but for a few key points and the Hindus were unlucky not to end up with a different result. Dipan Lakhani and Jitu Patel both recorded another win each, both defeating Queens’ new signing Mike Jones who did well to recover from these losses to then beat Sirish Modi and notch up his first point in the league.

Another match where a few key points made all the difference was played out between the Oakley B side of Chris Smith, Jamie Cole and Ian Warner vs the KG F team of Martyn Richards, Charlie Morrison and Tristan Noon. Richards scored his 3rd consecutive treble, and was particularly pleased to recover a 2 game deficit against Warner to steal their match 9-11 in the decider. The home side all scored two points apiece and Cole teamed up with Warner in the doubles to add another point for a 7-3 win.
