Press Report #11 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, Peter Martin of Queen’s Club bounced back from last week’s knee injury to win all three of his matches as Queens B took on KG A. Matthew Palaczky made his first appearance in Division 1 for Queens, but found the opposition too strong and came away empty handed, but team mate Denise Weller won two matches to give their side a draw. The KG B team of Roger Bielby, Phil Ware and Duncan Sibbick suffered another heavy defeat this week when they met the Alpha Cars team of Paul Rattue, Kevin Macken and Terry White. Apart from a valiant attempt by Ware and Sibbick to take the doubles match, the visitors put up little resistance and Alpha reaped the rewards, strolling to a 10-0 victory. St Peters B seem to have got into the habit of losing. This week it was Minitec A that meted out the punishment. At the half way stage, the home side appeared to rally a little, but with Jonathan Evans, Steve Murgatroyd and Andrew Parker in full flow, there was little they could do to stop the visitors taking three points apiece as well as the doubles for a 0-10 away win. In Division 2, Basingstoke Hindu Society A came up against some stiff opposition in the form of the Queens D team of Nigel Cooper, Celia Hooker and Bill Bavister. However, the Division 2 leaders rose to the challenge and, despite some good work by Queens, the Hindus came away with a 7-3 victory. The Queens E side of Roy Pike, Robin Burns and George Hellens used their combination of unorthodox equipment and years of experience to full effect as they defeated visiting side KG D this week. KG’s Josh Manson scored a superb win over Hellens, but the visitors were otherwise unsuccessful and Queens finished with a healthy 9-1 win. Despite having a huge squad, RAF Odiham turned out with only Simon Clarke and Paul Frazer when they hosted Portals this week. Having conceded three points, the RAF then soon found themselves trailing 1-6, but then knuckled down to secure wins in their next three matches for a more respectable 4-6 loss. The KG F team of Martyn Richards, Charlie Morrison and Tristan Noon had two good wins this week. The first was a very closely contended 6-4 win against the Queens C side of Peter Coppins, Frank Lii and Keith Cutmore. Richards scored a tremendous treble, despite some serious opposition from Coppins and Lii, while Noon and Morrison scored one each. Later in the week the same KG F team played a 2 man KG E team of David MacDonald and Zoe Blagborough in a rearranged fixture. KG E captain MacDonald notched up very good win over Noon, but otherwise the E side was unsuccessful and the F team was pleased with their 1-9 victory. KG E made a second appearance this week as a full-strength side of Steve Ng, Pete Millie and Zoe Blagborough hosted Oakley B with a near reversal of their match against KG F. NG and Millie both scored trebles, while Blagborough recorded a single win as well as a doubles win with Ng for a welcome 8-2 victory. AWE made up for last week’s heavy defeat by defeating an on-form KG C side of Matt Wilson, Jared Binner and Alan Wilson. AWE’s John McLarty scored a comfortable treble while team mates Ken Wyld and Steve Jones also added a point each. Together with a doubles win, the AWE side had a well deserved 4-6 success.
