Press Report #12
Wednesday 16th December 2009

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, an outstanding win for KG A’s Tony Amies over Winklebury’s Malcolm Cummins gave his team a great start when they hosted Winklebury this week. Amies looked to be about to repeat this success when he took on John Golding, losing the first 2 games, but fighting back to take the next 1, only for Golding to up the ante, winning the decider 10-12. Phil Ware, playing up from the KG B team, has been short on luck this season but put in a great performance against Golding, beating him 3 games to 1. Winklebury’s Colin Wilkes was the only player unbeaten on the night as his side finished with a healthy 2-8 victory.

After their comfortable 10-0 victory last week, the Minitec A side of Jonathan Evans, Steve Murgatroyd and Andrew Parker were confident of their prospects when they clashed with club mates Ian Short, Louis Conlon and Norman Swift of Minitec B. However, the B side had their own plans. In the first match of the evening, Short took an early lead over Murgatroyd, taking the first 2 games. Murgatroyd then dug deep and clawed his way back into the match winning the next 2 games. The deciding game could have gone either way, but it was Short who triumphed, winning 10-12 to seal the match.  By the half way stage, the A side were leading 3-2, but some excellent play from Swift and Conlon saw the A finish a poor second at 4-6.

St Peters B continue to find it hard going in Division 1. This week they were hosted by a KG B team of Patrick Garlick, Roger Bielby and Duncan Sibbick. Garlick proved too strong for the St Peters side, but St Peters’ Steve Armstrong finally returned to form to beat both Bielby and Sibbick to give his side a welcome 2 points. Final result, KG B wins 8-2.

In Division 2, AWE swung back from feast to famine as they struggled against a powerful RAF Odiham side of John Edbrooke, Paul Frazer and Simon Clarke. After losing the first 9 matches, AWE’s Ken Wyld tried to salvage something for his team in the final match of the evening against Clarke, taking the second and fourth games. By the start of the fifth game though, Wyld had nothing left to give and Clarke closed the match to give his side a 0-10 win.

Having trailed Basingstoke Hindu Society A team for most of the season, RAF Odiham’s 10 point haul has pushed them up to the top of the pile.

The KG C side of Matt Wilson, Jared Binner and Alan Wilson repeated their last week’s result of a 6-4 loss, this time to a Queens D side of Celia Hooker, Lorainne Mortimer and Bill Bavister. No player was unbeaten on the night, but Matthew Wilson deserves a mention for a well deserved win over Hooker after recovering from a 2 game deficit.

Steve Ng again showed KG E team mates, David MacDonald and Zoe Blagborough the way to go as he notched up a superb treble as his side took on the Queens team of Peter Coppins, Keith Cutmore and Frank Lii. Ng and Blagborough were unlucky not to secure a doubles victory over Coppins and Cutmore after winning the fourth game to level the match. The Queens trio had an even share of the spoils, taking 2 points each for a welcome 7-3 win.
