Press Report #13 & 12 No player hit a maximum in a top of the table clash in Division 2 of the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League as leaders KG “B” drew 5-5 with chasers St Peters B. St Peters were 5-2 up but then dropped the last 3 sets as Brian Wilde was denied his treble by Duncan Sibbick 11-8 in the last set and then Alan Lipscombe had glory taken away from him as Roger Bielby defeated him in 3 straight sets and then the tricky Phil Ware fooled Steve Armstrong to seal the draw. Another team in the mix at the top of the table won 8-2 over Queens “E”. Nigel Cooper and Mike Chamberlain hit trebles for Queens B to keep the pressure up on KG “B”. Nigel Cooper then starred again as he lead Queens B to an 8-2 win over Essex Eagles. Cooper beat Patrick Garlick 13-11 in a five set thriller to seal his maximum. Garlick picked up the 2 points for the Eagles with wins over George Freeman and Roy Pike. Lorraine Mortimer had a good 5 set win over Pete Blunden but the Queens D side went down 7-3 to Portals. John McLarty picked up the 3 points as AWE went down 7-3 to KG “C” as did George Hellans for Queens C as they lost 7-3 to Queens E The leaders in Division One both dropped points with Queens A dropping 2 points against KG “A” with Louis Conlon picking up the 2 points coming back from 2 sets down to beat Tim Pang 13-11 in the 5th set and taking Alex Garlick in 4 sets. Meanwhile chasers St Peters “A” dropped 3 against Cannons with Paul Rattue taking the scalp of Sean Pickin and coming back from the dead against Richard Mole winning 12-10 on the 5th set. Malcolm Cummins and Colin Wilkes were unbeaten as Winklebury defeated Cannons 8-2 . Tony Brown eased to a treble as Hannington beat Oakley “A” 7-3. Chas Smith of Oakley impressed picking up 2 points with wins over Steve Rollason and Paul Robinson. Norman Swift continued his great form with a maximum over a strong Minitec Powerlocks side. Swift was taken to the wire but came out victorious beating young Jonathan Evans 11-9 in the 5th set and then beat Steve Murgatroyd in 4 sets but Swift’s trebles was not enough to prevent a 6-4 loss for Minitec Profiles. |
