Press Report #13
Wednesday 23rd December 2009

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, Queens A junior Louis Webb sealed his first win in this Division, beating Alan Lipscombe of St Peters B. Lipscombe started well, winning the first two games, but young Palaczky worked tirelessly to take the next three games. Another great effort by St Peters’ Steve Armstrong resulted in an unexpected loss for Alan Palaczky. No problems for Tony Palaczky though as he notched up another treble to give his side a 3-7 victory.

Paul Rattue helped his side Alpha Cars to a 5-5 draw over close rivals Hannington this week, scoring a confident treble of his own and partnering with Terry White to win the doubles against Hannington’s Tony Brown and Duncan Groves who both scored two singles wins. At one point it looked as though Alpha Cars’ Ron Powell might cause an upset by beating Brown, but Brown recovered the early setback to win the match.

Another good win for Winklebury this week. Malcolm Cummins was in great form – comfortably winning all his matches against Oakley A. Oakley’s Steve Morris was delighted with his outstanding win over Hanningtons’ John Golding. Winklebury’s Dave Wise twice dropped an early game against both Dave Smith and Jason White, but on both occasions he stepped up another gear to easily win the remaining games to take the match and making a valuable contribution to his team’s 9-1 win.

In Division 2, RAF Odiham extended their lead as Roger Barnacle, Paul Frazer and Steve Preston powered through Queens D for a 9-1 win. Celia Hooker scored Queen’s only point with a win over Preston, and was unfortunate not to pick up more in two desperately close matches against Barnacle and Frazer.

Queens E continued their winning streak beating club mates Queens C 7-3. The E team’s Robin Burns scored another treble, despite being pushed hard by the C team’s Mike Chamberlain. Burns also shared a doubles success with team mate George Freeman who added a single point of his own by beating Frank Lii.

Portals were only able to field a team of Peter Blunden and Avril Waters when they met KG E this week. Both were able to beat David MacDonald, but were unsuccessful against Peter Millie and Steve Ng. Millie vs Waters was an epic clash with both players using their years of experience and guile to maximum effect. Millie won the opening game, but then Waters retaliated to take the second. The third game could have gone anybody’s way, but Millie eventually closed it out at 18-16. Once again, Waters came back to win the fourth game and forced the decider. The final game didn’t disappoint, with both players having to fight for every point until Millie eventually triumphed 11-9, helping his side to an 8-2 win.
