The Basingstoke Table Tennis team handicap competition is down to the quarter finals stage after some very close matches in the qualifying rounds. The exciting part of the competition is the likelihood of a very close match as players are handicapped with a score depending on their ability and form. The leads to some nail biting finishes. AWE beat Oakley B by just 7 points (373-380), Portals beat Oakley A by 10 points (446-436) and St Peters A beat KG B by just 6 points (383-377). Other teams through to the last eight were Minitec Profiles, Winklebury and Queens E with 2 matches outstanding.

In the league Tony Palaczky showed why he is top of the averages after a maximum over Minitec Profiles that included a 4 set win over the powerful Norman Swift. It was Swift who picked up 2 points off of Queens “A” with wins over Tim Pang and Pete Martin in an 8-2 loss. It was Swift who restricted St Peters “A” catch up on Queens “A” at the top of the Division beating Pete Matthews, Sean Pickin and James Wright and helping to take the doubles which meant a disappointing 6-4 win for St Peters. St Peters are now 7 points behind Queens “A” at the top on same games played after a good 9-1 win over Minitec Powerlocks. Pickin and Matthews both hit trebles but Richard Mole was denied his glory by Steve Murgatroyd. Tony Amies recorded a good win over Tony Brown as he lead KG “A” to a 6-4 win over KG “A”. with a fine maximum. Kathy Ridgard added 2 more wins for KG to lift the team away from the bottom 2 of the table. Mid table Cannons hit 9 past Oakley “A” with Terry White unbeaten.

In Division 2 St Peters B beat the Basingstoke Hindu Society 10-0 to keep the pressure on the top 2 , KG B and Queens B. KG B dropped 2 points against Essex Eagles who had Patrick Garlick winning the 2 games beating Phil Ware and Roger Bielby but just lost out in the 5th set to Duncan Sibbick who was the treble hero for the KG side. Queens B dropped 3 points to Portals with Nigel Cooper beating the current best player in the Division , Steve Redstall in 3 straight sets. Mike Chamberlain added a brace for Queens B with a 5 set with over Pete Blunden. St Peters B themselves dropped 3 points against AWE with John McLarty doing the damage with 2 wins but he found St Peters’ Steve Armstrong too strong on the night. Dave Smith was the champion for Oakley B as his maximum helped a 7-3 win over Queens E and Terri Allison impressed with an 11-8 win in the 5th set against Peter Coppins. Steve Redstall was ruthless as Portals beat Queens C 8-2 and Bill Bavister played a blinder picking up the 3 points for Queens C in their loss to KG “C”. Bavister's night included a good career win over Pete Millie. John Mclarty hit a good treble against Queens D leading his AWE team to a 6-4 win.
