St Peters “A” closed the gap on Queens “A” to just 4 points at the top of Division One of the Basingstoke Table Tennis League with two thirds of the season gone. Sean Pickin starred for St Peters as the two teams met for the second time this season. A treble from Pickin ensured a 6-4 win with wins over Tony Palaczky and Alex Garlick. Pete Matthews was 2 sets up against Palaczky before Palaczky responded winning the next 3 sets. James Wright was pleased with a 4 set win over Pete Martin but the doubles went to Queens making the overall result the same as in the teams first meeting. Young Jonathan Evans, who is currently ranked 25th in the England cadet ranking list ,probably had the best night of his Basingstoke League career with a treble that included wins over Malcolm Cummins and Colin Wilkes but his 3 wins were the only points scored fro Minitec Profiles as the team went down 7-3 to Winklebury with Steve Murgatroyd having an off night. Norman Swift was again the hero for Minitec Profiles with a maximum over KG “A”. Ian Short also chipped in with a good 3 set win over Louis Conlon but earlier fell to Dave Kimberley in a 5-5 draw. Earlier Minitec Powerlocks recorded a 7-3 win over Cannons with no player hitting a treble. Paul Rattue denied Steve Murgatroyd and Jonathan Evans their glory and Dave Mills took the scalp of Rattue. Cannons were then defeated by Queens “A” with Alex Garlick and Tony Palaczky unbeaten. Terry White and Rattue picked up the two points with wins over Tim Pang.

In Division 2 Essex Eagles severely restricted St Peter’s B’s chances of second place battling out a 5-5 draw. Alan Lipscombe was awarded the man of the match after a trebles that included wins over Patrick and Bob Garlick. It was Patrick Garlick who had one of the best wins of his career beating Steve Armstrong in 3 straight sets. Meanwhile rivals Queens B beat 2 man AWE 8-2 with AWE’s John McLarty being denied his maximum by Denise Weller. Title favourites KG B beat Portals 9-1 thanks to trebles from Roger Bielby and Phil Ware both taking the scalp of Steve Redstall. Louis Webb picked up 2 wins to help Queens D beat their C team 6-4 with wins over Mick Buley and Bill Bavister. Lorraine Mortimer denied George Hellans his maximum but fell to Bavister in 5 sets in the first match of the night. No game went past 3 sets as Queens E demolished the Basingstoke Hindu Society 10-0.
