Press Report #20 & 18
Week commencing 25th February

The semi final draw for the Basingstoke Table Tennis team handicap competition has now been made with Portals looking favourites after  a convincing win over the Basingstoke Hindu Society in the quarter finals. The Portals team made up a deficit at the start of the evening and won the match by 47 points. Division One leader St Peters A played Queens E who are 6th from bottom in Division 2. St Peters had to win all 4 match by 11 points to 4 or less to win and just won by the narrow margin of 7 points. AWE beat Winklebury by 18 points to secure their place in the last 4 and Essex Eagles match against Minitec Profiles is outstanding. This means that St Peters have drawn the winner of this match and could setup a re-match after St Peters beat the Profiles in the first round with the Profiles progressing as narrow losers. In the other Semi final Portals have the home advantage against AWE.

In the normal league St Peters “A” kept the pressure on Queens “A” with a 10-0 win over Minitec Profiles with James Wright scrapping a treble after a scare and saving match points against Gary Livingstone. Dave Mills and Jonathan Evans hit maximums as Minitec Powerlocks beat Oakley “A” 9-1 with Oakley’s Steve Morris once again saving his side from a whitewash with a win over Gary Livingstone. Kevin Macken made a rare appearance for Cannons and his treble helped his team win 9-1 against KG ”A” who had Louis Conlon pick up the point with a win over Terry White.

In Division 2 KG “B” showed how invincible they are remaining unbeaten and powering two 10-0 wins over Queens D and AWE. Dave Partridge played up in the match against Queens D and stepped up to the mark with a fine treble. The normal trio of Roger Bielby , Duncan Sibbick and Phil Ware then resumed in the drubbing of AWE. However John McLarty shocked Bielby with Bielby just pulling through 14-12 in the 5th set. Queens B also remain unbeaten and also had a 10-0 win over Queens C with Denise Weller, Roy Pike and Nigel Cooper all winning in 4 sets or less. St Peters B cannot keep up with the leaders despite an 8-2 win over Portals with Steve Armstrong taking the scalp of Steve Redstall in 3 sets to seal his maximum. Bill Bavister joined Nick Reid both with unbeaten displays as Queens “E” had arguably their best result of the season beating KG “C” 8-2 with both players hitting notable wins over Dave Partridge and Peter Millie.
