Press Report #20 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis League, Hannington were in action twice this week, first at home to Queens B, when Queens B captain Peter Martin pulled off a spectacular treble against some fierce opposition from the Hannington trio of Steve Rollason, Duncan Groves and Paul Robinson. Queens Keith Dickenson was also severely tested; losing his first match to Robinson by a very narrow margin, but taking the next two to help his side to a 5-5 draw. Their second appearance, also at home, was against Queens A with Tony Brown replacing Groves in the line up. Queens Tony Palaczky trotted out his usual treble, but not without some resistance from the home side. Brother Alan lost out to Rollason, but pulled off two superb wins against Brown and Robinson. Hannington lost 4-6. Queens A also made two appearances this week, the second being against a Winklebury side of John Golding, Malcolm Cummins and Colin Wilkes. A massive tussle between Alan Palaczky and Wilkes, including one game that went all the way to 21-19, seemed to fire up Palaczky rather than tire him and he went on to notch up a well deserved maximum. Some inspired play from Malcolm Cummins led to a rare defeat for Tony Palaczky and an overall 5-5 draw. KG A bounced back from last week’s defeat by Minitec A when they took on club mates KG B at Essex Road. The A team’s Tony Amies hit a clean treble while Sue Tompsett recovered from a wobbly patch in her 4th game against Duncan Sibbick to take the decider giving her a maximum 3 points. The B team’s only success of the evening was Roger Bielby’s defeat of Patrick Garlick giving a final score of 1-9. A two-man Minitec A side of Andrew Parker and Steve Murgatroyd made short work of Oakley A, comfortably taking all 7 points available to them for a 7-3 win. The Minitec B team of Gary Livingstone, Ian Short and Louis Conlon also had an easy time courtesy of hosts St Peters B. The home side’s Alan Lipscombe and Steve Armstrong both gave Short a bit of scare, but in both cases, Short recovered to convincingly win the decider to seal a maximum for himself and his team. In Division 2, KG D’s Holly Edwards took the first 2 games of the evening off AWE’s Robin Treadwell, but Treadwell clawed back the next 2 games to set up the decider. The final game was neck and neck, but someone has to win and eventually it was Treadwell who triumphed 15-13. Edwards’ team mates Mike Wood and Josh Manson scored 2 individual points each and scored a narrow doubles victory, but AWE captain John McLarty went undefeated on the night to give a 5-5 draw. Basingstoke Hindu Society A had mixed fortunes when they hosted Queens E. Sav Thevendria continued his unbeaten run but team mate Mohak Dalesh, having taken the first game against Roy Pike in another 21-19 marathon then lost the next 3 and came away empty handed. A double for Paritosh Singh together with a fine doubles win for Singh and Thevendria over Burns and Pike gave the home side a good 6-4 victory. Portals gifted Oakley B a valuable 3 points when they turned out one player short this week. Portals’ Peter Blunden and Avril Waters started well enough, winning their first 2 singles matches and the doubles, but then Oakley’s Teri Allison and Ian Warner took 3 of the next 4 games for a 4-6 win. Basingstoke Hindu Society B continue to be unsuccessful and irrepressible in equal measures. This week the beneficiaries were Queens D who helped themselves to a maximum 10 points. KG F captain Martyn Richards had to withdraw at the last moment when his side hosted RAF Odiham, leaving juniors Tristan Noon and Charlie Morrison to the mercy of the vastly more experienced opposition. Despite some plucky play by the youngsters, they failed to get a result, giving the RAF 10 points to put them 2nd in the table with a game in hand over BHS A.
