Press Report #21 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis League, top of the table St Peters A defeated bottom of the table colleagues St Peters B with almost indecent haste. The B side’s Steve Armstrong managed to take a game off the A side’s James Wright, but otherwise there was little joy for the lowly B side. KG A’s Sue Tompsett had a great win over Queens A’s Alan Palaczky only to then lose out to junior Louis Webb in a five game thriller. Alan won his remaining 2 matches and brother Tony added 3 for a healthy 3-7 away win to Queens. Struggling KG B had a welcome win when they played Oakley A this week. KG’s Duncan Sibbick and Roger Bielby were unbeaten, but Oakley’s Dave Smith managed to salvage one point for his side, beating Phil Ware. Final score 1-9 to KG. Host team Queens B captain Peter Martin and Keith Dickenson both beat Alpha Cars’ Terry White and Ron Powell, but could not match Paul Rattue who comfortably won all his matches to help his side to a 4-6 win. Hannington were without their star player Tony Brown this week and it showed as they failed to win a single point against a strong Winklebury side of Dave Wise, Malcolm Cummins and Colin Wilkes. Hannington’s Paul Robinson managed to take an early game off Wise in their match, but was quickly put back in his place with Wise coming back strongly to take the next 3 thus ensuring a maximum 10 points for his side. In Division 2, Portals’ super veteran Avril Waters showed that she can still cut it as she comfortably defeated Queen’s C players Frank Lii, Mike Chamberlain and Keith Cutmore in fine style. Team mate Pete Blunden added 2 individual points and teamed up with son Steve for a good doubles victory and a 4-6 away win. Team captain Mike Wood opened up the scoring for KG D when they hosted Queens D this week, beating the tricky Bill Bavister in a closely fought match over 5 games. KG’s Josh Manson then did the same against Lorainne Mortimer. At 5-2, things seemed to be going well for KG but Queens finished strongly and took the remaining 3 matches to level the score at 5-5. Roger Barnacle scored a very good treble for RAF Odiham despite some fierce opposition from KG E’s Peter Millie and Steve Ng. RAF team mate Steve Preston added 2 points of his own and paired up with Darren Flack for a doubles win over KG’s Millie and Zoe Blagborough to give a final score of 3-7 to the RAF. AWE captain John McLarty held his side together when they visited Oakley B this week, winning all of his matches and pairing up with Steve Jones to add a doubles victory. The Oakley trio of Jamie Cole, Ian Warner and Teri Allison all scored 2 points each for a 6-4 home win. In KG C’s away match to Queens E, KG’s Jared Binner and Matthew Wilson both scored trebles over George Freeman, Roy Pike and Mick Buley. KG’s Alan Wilson came tantalising close to winning his matches against Freeman and Buley, but their experience won through and KG had to settle for a 4-6 win. The top two teams in the Division met up in a rearranged fixture when RAF Odiham hosted Basingstoke Hindu Society A. Sav Thevendria suffered his first defeat this season when he came up against RAF’s John Edbrooke who also beat Kanti Mistry. However, Edbrooke failed to beat Paritosh Singh after clawing back the 3rd and 4th games only to lose in the decider. Steve Preston and Simon Clarke added a point each to RAF’s total, but Singh went unbeaten on the night to level the match 5-5.
