Press Report #22
Wednesday 24th February 2010

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis League, the St Peters A side of Peter Matthews, James Wright and Sean Pickin continued to move further away from the also-rans as they stormed to a 2-8 defeat over hosts Minitec B. Only Norman Swift gave Minitec any hope; it looked like he might win the first match of evening against Matthews after going 2-1 up, but Matthews came back strongly to take the point. Later Swift teamed up with Gary Livingstone for a comfortable doubles win and finally he rounded off the evening with a good win over Wright.

The Alpha Cars’ team of Terry White, Paul Rattue and Ron Powell moved a little closer to securing second slot in the table below perennial runaway winners St Peters A, as they notched up a strong 7-3 win over a Winklebury side of John Golding, Peter Bradley and Colin Wilkes.

Queens A junior Louis Webb fought hard against Oakley A’s Jason White, Chas Smith and Steve Morris, but sadly failed to score a point. Webb’s team mates Alan and Tony Palaczky were also made to work quite hard but won all of their matches including the doubles for a 7-3 win.

Plucky Matt Wilson played up from KG C to help out KG A regulars Dave Kimberley and Sue Tompsett when they took on a Hannington side of Steve Rollason, Tony Brown and Paul Robinson but it was a poor night for KG A with only Tompsett able to win a match, beating Robinson 9-11 in the decider of what was a very close match, as they slumped to a 9-1 defeat.

When St Peters B hosted Queens B, St Peters’ Steve Armstrong started the evening with a massive 3-0 win over Queens’ captain Peter Martin. Queens’ junior Matthew Palaczky put up a good show in all his matches but failed to score a point while team mate Keith Dickenson had a great evening, comfortably winning all his matches to help Queens B to a 4-6 win.

In Division 2, an RAF Odiham team of Darren Flack, Roger Barnacle and Steve Preston had a tough time against the Queens E trio of Robin Burns, George Freeman and Roy Pike, but still managed to walk off with 9 points to their credit. Queens’ only point was courtesy of Burns who had a tremendous victory over Barnacle.

AWE captain John McLarty again scored a great treble when his team took on Queen’s C this week. McLarty also paired up with Steve Jones for a good doubles win, but Queens players Frank Lii, Mike Chamberlain and Peter Coppins all scored two apiece for a 4-6 win to Queens.

The Basingstoke Hindu Society A team of Sav Thevendria, Kanti Mistry and Paritosh Singh had a fairly routine win over KG D, with only KG’s Josh Manson able to avoid the whitewash, winning the final match of the evening over Mistry.
