Press Report #24
Wednesday 10th March 2010

Basingstoke Table Tennis League’s annual Closed Championship will be held on Saturday 20th March at Richard Aldworth Science College and will feature both junior and senior players from the Basingstoke league. Spectators are welcome and entrance is free. Refreshments will be available and the fun starts at 9am. The finals night will be held at Basingstoke Rugby Club on Tuesday 23rd March.

In Division 1 of the league, Minitec B were in action twice this week. First at home to Winklebury, they found a side determined to clinch the runners-up spot. Despite some determined play by the home side, including 2 great wins from Louis Conlon, Winklebury took away a useful 8 points.

Later in the week saw the same Minitec B side of Gary Livingstone, Ian Short and Louis Conlon playing at the home of Hannington. This time, a well deserved treble for Conlon, supported in equal measures by his team mates saw Minitec triumph 3-7.

The other team in contention for second spot in the league, Alpha Cars, increased their lead over Winklebury as they demolished Oakley A 10-0.

St Peters B managed to scrape a few more points when they hosted KG A this week. With most games being won by only 2 or 3 points, it was nip and tuck all the way. Patrick Garlick scored a fine maximum with Dave Kimberley adding another two points and one from Sue Thompsett. The last match of the evening included a marathon 20-22 game, in which St Peters’ Simon Kiefer just managed to get the edge over Thompsett to give a final result of 3-7.

In Division 2, its getting very close at the top of the table. Although Basingstoke Hindu Society has a 12 point lead over nearest rivals RAF Odiham, the RAF still have 2 games in hand so are well placed for a last minute steal.

Sticking with RAF Odiham, the team of Simon Clarke, Darren Flack and Roger Barnacle hosted a KG D team of regulars Mike Wood and Josh Manson together with Steve Ng, on loan from the KG E team. Hard on the heels of the Hindu Society as they are, the airmen were taking no prisoners. Ng had the only success for the visitors, beating Flack, and was desperately unlucky to not win two more, being narrowly beaten twice in his deciders against Clarke and Barnacle for a final score of 9-1.

The Portals trio of Blunden, Blunden and Blunden found things hard going when they visited Queens D as home. Peter Blunden had the only success for Portals, beating Bill Bavister. Queen’s Nigel Cooper and Lorainne Mortimer both scored trebles, with Bavister adding 2 individual points and pairing with Cooper for a doubles win and a 9-1 result.

Basingstoke Hindu Society B team continues to be a good source of much needed points for the other teams in the Division. This week’s lucky recipients were KG F as Martyn Richards, Tristan Noon and Charlie Morrison strolled to an easy 10-0 victory.
