Press Report #27 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League, St Peters A further widened the gulf between themselves and the also-rans as they demolished Oakley A at Oakley Village Hall 0-10. The Minitec A side of Jonathan Evans, Andrew Parker and Steve Murgatroyd continued their late charge on 2nd place in the Division, beating bottom of the table St Peters B 10-0. Queen’s junior Louis Webb was involved in a real see-saw of a match against Hannington’s Paul Robinson, winning the first 2 games, only to then lose the next 2 games and finally being forced to fight tooth and nail to secure a 19-17 win in the decider. It was a fairly routine evening for Webb’s team mates, the Palaczky brothers, Alan and Tony as they each notched up maximums over the visitors for a final result of 8-2. In Division 2, current leaders Basingstoke Hindu Society A maintained their lead, beating Queens D 1-9. Queen’s Nigel Cooper scored the only victory for his side on the night, beating Mohak Dalesh. Second placed RAF Odiham matched BHS A’s result, also beating Portals 1-9. Steve Redstall saved Portals from a whitewash, beating Steve Preston and also coming tantalisingly close to take the final match of the evening against Chris Coombes. AWE suffered a similar defeat, losing 1-9 at the hands of KG C. This time it was Ken Wyld who saved the day for AWE, winning the last match of the evening against KG’s Alan Wilson. The KG D team of Mike Wood, Holly Edwards and Josh Manson hosted a Queens E team of Robin Burns, George Hellens and Roy Pike for what turned out to be a very closely contested match with no player going unbeaten on the night. Burns, Pike, Manson and Wood all notched up two apiece with Hellens adding a single for Queens and Manson/Wood taking the doubles for a very satisfactory 5-5 draw. The KG F team of Martyn Richards, Tristan Noon and Charlie Morrison had an equally tight match against the Queens C team of Frank Lii, Keith Cutmore and Mike Chamberlain. The first singles match of the evening was a marathon event between Lii and Richards in which Lii pulled out all the stops to win and Richards took a nasty tumble as he battled hard to stay in the match. Lii finally triumphed 11-8 in the decider. Cutmore and Chamberlain subjected Richards to more punishment as they also dug deep, trying hard to win their matches. However, Richards came back on both occasions to win the deciding game. Lii ended up scoring a maximum for his side, while juniors Noon and Morrison added one each for KG for a final score of 5-5.
