Press Report #27
Week commencing 14th April

St Peters A laid down the stakes to Queens “A” in the race to the Division One title that looks to be going to the wire. James Wright hit a maximum as St Peters hit 10 past Hannington A with little resistance from the village side who are now confirmed as relegated finishing second bottom. Queens are 28 points adrift of St Peters with 3 games in hand and St Peters have just one more match to play.

Steve Murgatroyd and Jonathan Evans won all their singles matches to beat KG “A” 6-4 but the Minitec Powerlock and current Basingstoke doubles champions lost their doubles match in 3 straight sets to Louis Conlon and Dave Kimberley. Conlon also scared Murgatroyd losing a 2 sets to one advantage and 13-11 in the 5th set to the current Basingstoke singles champion. Pete Bradley came back from 2 sets down to beat Chaz Smith of Oakley 12-10 in the 5th set as Winklebury defeated Oakley 10-0.

Paul Rattue took the scalp of Norman Swift as Cannons were 8-2 winners over Minitec Powerlocks in a game that also saw Ron Powell hit a good win over the tricky Ian Short.

In Division 2 St Peters B were 9 points shy of second spot as they finished a comfortable third after a 7-3 win over rivals Queens B, who finished Divisonal runners up and are promoted to the top flight. Brian Wilde was the star for St Peters with a fine treble and Denise Weller upset Steve Armstrong with a 3 set win for Queens. Kanti Mistry and Mohak Dalesh picked up 2 points with singles wins but their Basingstoke Hindu Society team were 8-2 loser to Portals.
