Press Report #29
Wednesday 21st April 2010

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League, Queen’s A pulled off a spectacular win over close rivals Alpha Cars. Repeating their performance of last week, the Palaczky brothers, Alan and Tony both notched up maximums over the visitors despite a huge effort by Alpha’s Paul Rattue who came desperately close to winning his matches against the Queens pair, losing both matches very closely in the decider.

A Queens B side of Peter Martin, Matthew Palaczky and Andrew Walker hosted the Oakley A team of Jason White, Sarah Whithorn and Dave Smith. Junior Palaczky surprised Whithorn, winning the first and the fourth games of their match, but Whithorn’s experience came into play in the decider which she closed out to take the match. Martin and Walker both scored a good treble each as well as pairing up for a fine doubles win to take the final score to 7-3.

St Peters B got off to a great start in their match against visiting KG B, as Simon Kiefer and Steve Armstrong both notched up early victories over Phil Ware and Duncan Sibbeck respectively. However, KG B weren’t going down without a fight and they produced a fantastic recovery to win the last 5 matches of the evening for a 4-6 away win.

In Division 2, the KG C team of Jared Binner, Matthew Wilson and Alan Wilson was in action twice this week. First they were at home to Oakley B when Matthew Wilson added to his haul of trebles. Oakley’s Jamie Cole scored a useful 2 wins for his side, including a spectacular win over Binner and a great comeback over Alan Wilson. Binner also scored two singles wins which together with a doubles win gave the home side a 6-4 result.

Next KG C hosted Queens D when Matthew Wilson was denied another treble by Queens’ Celia Hooker although he was able to beat both Bill Bavister and Lorainne Mortimer. KG captain Jared Binner scored a fine treble which featured a ding-dong battle against Hooker, with Binner scraping a win in the decider. Binner also teamed up with Alan Wilson for a closely contested doubles win and another 6-4 victory.

Queens E rushed to a 5-0 lead over visitors Oakley B, and looked to be about  to make it 6 in a row as Roy Pike went 2 games to 1 up over Oakley’s Chris Smith. However, Smith dug deep to secure the key points and won the next 2 games. Smith’s team mate Teri Allison followed suit, beating George Freeman. Allison later tried to do the same against Roy Pike, but this time was unsuccessful, giving the home side a 7-3 win.

The Basingstoke Hindu Society’s usual venue was not available when their B team hosted KG D meaning the match had to be played in the main hall under very poor lighting. Mike Wood and Josh Manson both scored a maximum three points apiece for KG, while team mate Holly Edwards failed to win any singles match but did contribute towards a good doubles with Manson win over Sirish Modi and Jitu Patel for a 3-7 away win.

Division 2 runner up Steve Ng scored a convincing treble as his side KG E hosted a Queens C side of Peter Coppins, Keith Cutmore and Frank Lii. Ng’s team mate Peter Millie added another 2 and Ng also paired up with team captain Dave MacDonald to add a doubles win to their total for a 6-4 win.
