Press Report #3 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, a local derby between Queens A and B teams was a very closely contended match resulting in a 6-4 win to the A team. Tony Palaczky scored a treble while brother Alan added two points of his own and contributed towards a comfortable doubles win for the pair. Louis Webb looked as though he might gain his first Division 1 point as he clawed his way back to 2-2 after being 2-0 down against the B team’s Denise Weller. However, it wasn’t to be and Weller regained her composure to take the last game. A two-man Minitec A side of Andrew Parker and Steve Murgatroyd escaped with a draw when they hosted the KG A team of Dave Kimberley, Sue Tompsett and new signing, Steve Ng. Murgatroyd took all 3 points available to him, but Parker only managed a single point after conceding very close matches to Kimberley and Tompsett. KG A, having struggled to avoid the drop to Division 2 last season, now find themselves unbeaten after 3 matches. Alpha Cars’ Paul Rattue found his side’s match against Minitec B to be a walk in the park as he strolled comfortably to three singles wins. Rattue’s team mate Terry White added two points of his own and combined with Rattue to defeat Norman Swift and Gary Livingstone in a desperately close doubles match which saw the home side winning the first, third and final games. Final result 6-4. Winklebury also only managed to field a two-man team this week playing away to KG B, although Malcolm Cummins and Colin Wilkes didn’t seem to be too hampered by this deficit as they still took six of the seven points available to them from the home side. Only Roger Bielby managed to get a result, clinching his match against Cummins 12-10 in the decider. Final result 4-6. In Division 2, the Basingstoke Hindu Society B team appeared to be starting to find their way as they battled hard against the experienced AWE team of Ken Wyld, Steve Jones and Robin Treadwell. Dipan Lakhani scored his first league point beating Treadwell 8-11 in their decider. Despite the efforts of the away team though, AWE won 9-1. Another local derby this week; this time KG C vs KG F which proved to be a very exciting affair. The C team’s Matt Wilson was undoubtedly the star of the show, winning all his matches in fine style for his first maximum playing in the league. Dad, Alan Wilson also opened his account in the league, beating the F team’s Charlie Morrison, winning the last three games 11-9 after having dropped the first two games. Final result 7-3. The KG D team of Dave Partridge, Holly Edwards and Josh Manson were entertained by Portals fielding a somewhat more “experienced” team of Steve Redstall, Avril Waters and Pete Blunden. Experience proved to be deciding factor and the junior players struggled to make an impression; only Partridge was able to have any impact, beating both Waters and Blunden. Partridge’s match against Redstall had started to go his way when unfortunately a disturbance in the bar caused a bit of a distraction from which he was not to recover. Final result 8-2. Queens C vs Oakley B was a very closely contested match resulting in a 5-5 draw. New Queens signing Frank Lii made a good start to his league play, beating Chris Smith and only losing to Ian Warner 6-11 in the final game of a very tight match. No player remained unbeaten on the night. Catch up on all the latest table tennis news in Basingstoke by visiting the league website: www.basingstokett.co.uk |
