Press Report #30
Wednesday 28th April 2010

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League, Basingstoke’s junior table tennis star, Jonathan Evans, delivered a punishing blow to the otherwise all-conquering St Peters A team of Sean Pickin, Peter Matthews and James Wright, convincingly beating all three players in their last fixture of this season. Evans’s Minitec B team mate Steve Murgatroyd added a single of his own to give a final score of 4-6 to St Peters A.

Alpha Cars made sure of their runners-up spot in the division, beating Hannington 3-7. Paul Rattue scored a good treble for Alpha and it looked as though Terry White would do the same, having comfortably won his first 2 matches. However, White slumped to a 2 games to 0 deficit in the last match of the evening against Steve Rollason, then appeared to have regained the upper hand as he took the next 2 games to level the match. Unfortunately for White, it was Rollason who managed to scrape an 11-9 victory in the decider.

Although Queens B turned up short on players when they met KG A, the away team more than made up for this shortfall with extra determination. Some great play by both Peter Martin and Denise Weller had KG’s Dave Kimberley, Patrick Garlick and Sue Tompsett reeling and gave Queens a well deserved 3-7 victory.

Winklebury inflicted some more pain on lowly Oakley A, with Colin Wilkes in particularly good form and taking an easy treble off the home side. The home side saved some face though as they all managed a single point each with Chas Smith and Jason White both beating Winklebury’s Peter Bradley in the decider and Steve Morris achieving a great win over John Golding for a 3-7 final score.

A 2-man St Peters B visited Queen’s A resulting in another maximum for both of the Palaczky brothers, Alan and Tony. Queen’s junior Louis Webb notched up a win over St Peter’s Tom Speed, but lost out to Steve Armstrong for a 9-1 home win.

In Division 2, RAF Odiham finally managed to overhaul Basingstoke Hindu Society A team, who they had been trailing most of the season, finishing only 4 points ahead in the table. This week an RAF Odiham team of Darren Flack, Simon Clarke and Steve Preston added to their list of successes, beating AWE 8-2. AWE’s John  McLarty was pushed to the limit on each of his singles matches, beating Preston 9-11 in their decider but narrowly losing out to the others.

Basingstoke Hindu Society A team meanwhile clawed back one point over the RAF, beating KG C 1-9. KG captain Jared Binner scored the only point for his team with a win over Mohak Dalesh.

A mid-table battle between Portals and KG E resulted in the expected draw, with Steve Redstall picking up a maximum for Portals while Steve Ng and Peter Millie both scored a brace for KG.

Queens C v Queens E was also a draw, with the E team’s Roy Pike having to dig deep against both Peter Coppins and Frank Lii to secure a maximum for his side. Keith Cutmore and Coppins both scored two wins for the C team.

Basingstoke Hindu Society B team finished the season the same way they started it; with a heavy loss but cheerful nonetheless. This time is was an Oakley B side of Ron Draper, Chris Smith and Ian Warner dishing out the punishment. Sirish Modi saved the Hindu Society from a whitewash though, beating Chris Smith.
