Press Report #4 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, St Peters A, as ever, had the upper hand over Alpha Cars. St Peters’ Pete Matthews is still unbeaten this season although he was severely tested by Alpha’s Paul Rattue in a tense game that finally saw Matthews taking the final game to clinch his victory. Rattue had similarly tight matches against Sean Pickin and James Wright, but managed to win both of these matches 3-1 thus gaining his side’s only 2 points of the evening. St Peters B team didn’t fare quite so well as their A team when they were away to Minitec B. Gary Livingstone, Norman Swift and Ian Short made easy work of the opposition as they breezed to a 10-0 victory. The Queens B side of Pete Martin, Andy Walker and Keith Dickenson were on good form when they hosted Hannington this week and by the half way stage seemed to be well in control. However, a useful treble from Hannington’s Tony Brown, together with a very closely contested match that resulted in a narrow win for team mate Steve Rollason over Dickenson meant that Queens had to settle for a 6-4 win. With no losses so far this season, KG A were hoping for a good result against the KG B team and that’s what they got, with a 7-3 win. However, after the first three matches, it didn’t look so good as Duncan Sibbeck and Roger Bielby had each won their first match thus putting their hosts under pressure. The A team’s Dave Kimberley and Sue Tompsett put in good performances to recover the situation, but Tony Amies was the star of the show, winning all of his matches despite a valiant attempt by Bielby. The Winklebury team of Malcolm Cummins, John Golding and Colin Wilkes vs Queens A resulted in a 5-5 draw. Cummins and Wilkes scored 2 points apiece, both being stopped by Queens’ Tony Palaczky who scored another treble. Brother Alan added a point of his own and contributed towards a comfortable doubles win for the pair. Still no luck for Louis Webb in this division, although he did succeed in taking a game each off Golding and Wilkes. In Division 2, the shock result of the season so far was surely the 10-0 defeat of Portals by Oakley B. The away team worked hard to avoid the defeat, but even the reliable Avril Waters was unable to prevent the whitewash to Ian Warner, Terry Allison and Jamie Cole. The RAF Odiham team of Steve Preston, Simon Clarke and John Edbrooke had a similarly straight forward match against KG F as they soared to a 0-10 win. Tristan Noon nearly upset the RAF’s perfect 10 when he took the second and third games off Preston, but the serviceman knuckled down and comfortably regained the upper hand to win the next two games and the match. KG C were usurped by KG E due to well deserved trebles from Peter Millie and Steve Ng. Zoe Blagborough also recorded a win over Alan Wilson, thus opening her account for the season. After taking the first two games, Blagborough dropped the third 9-11, but regained her composure to win the fourth game and the match. KG E won 7-3. KG D had a good night against visiting an AWE side of Ken Wyld, Steve Jones and Robin Treadwell, with Mike Wood and Josh Manson both posting a treble; this being Manson’s first maximum in the league. They were ably supported by Charlie Morrison, playing up from the KG F team who scored two points that would have been three but for a superb comeback by Wyld to take the fourth and fifth games of their match. The Basingstoke Hindu Society B team were still finding it hard going when they hosted a Queens D side of Lorainne Mortimer, Bill Bavister and Nigel Cooper. The visitors made light work of their hosts and walked away with a 0-10 victory. Catch up on all the latest table tennis news in Basingstoke by visiting the league website: www.basingstokett.co.uk |
