Press Report #5
Wednesday 28th October 2009

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, a solid team effort helped KG A to retain their unbeaten run, although it was a close-run match with Queens A’s Tony Palaczky scoring three points and team mate Peter Martin adding two for a 5-5 draw.

After their first 3 matches against Hannington, the Winklebury team of Malcolm Cummins, John Golding and Colin Wilkes looked to being heading for a strong win with each player winning his first match of the evening. At 0-3 down though, Tony Brown, Steve Rollason and Peter Henderson suddenly turned the tables and won 6 of the remaining 7 matches to win 6-4 overall.

After their loss at the hands of their A team last week, the KG B team of Duncan Sibbick, Patrick Garlick and Roger Bielby were looking for a win over newly promoted Oakley A and they weren’t disappointed. Only Chaz Smith was able to have any impact against the home side, losing to Sibbick in 5 and finally breaking his side’s duck by beating Bielby 11-13 in the decider. KG B won 9-1.

Another team out to put right their loss of last week was the Alpha Cars side of Terry White, Paul Rattue and Kevin Macken when they hosted the unfortunate Queens B. Keith Dickenson put up a brief resistance against White, taking the 3rd game, but White changed up a gear to take the 4th game and helped his side to a 10-0 win.

The St Peters A vs St Peters B match was pretty much a foregone conclusion, with Sean Pickin, Pete Matthews and James Wright making easy work of the newly promoted B side in one of the lowest scoring matches so far this season.

In Division 2, Portals recovered from last week’s heavy defeat at the hands of Oakley B, comfortably beating Queens C 8-2. Portals’ Steve Redstall and Peter Blunden scored three apiece and joined up for a doubles win, while John Blunden added a further point to his side’s haul.

In one of those matches that could so easily have had a quite different result but for a few key points, Queens D posted a healthy 8-2 victory over KG D. Nigel Cooper scored a fine treble for Queens with Mike Wood gaining KG’s only points. No luck for KG juniors Josh Manson and Holly Edwards; although Manson came close to taking the scalp of Celia Hooker, winning their 3rd and 4th games only to lose the decider 15-13.

The match between AWE and Oakley B resulted in another heavy loss for the AWE side of Ken Wyld, Steve Jones and Robin Treadwell. Oakley’s Ian Warner, Chris Smith and Robert Draper made light work of their hosts to gain a useful 0-10 away win.

KG E were in action twice this week, firstly they were away to an RAF Odiham team of Andy Pipe, Steve Preston and Darren Flack. Pipe proved to be too strong for the opposition, winning his 3 matches, although he was tested by KG’s Steve Ng who managed to beat both Preston and Flack. RAF Odiham  won 8-2.

Next KG E were hosted by the Basingstoke Hindu Society A team when Steve Ng again took 2 points as did team mate Pete Millie, but all found the Hindu Society’s Sav Thevendria too strong as he notched up another treble. Basingstoke Hindu Society won 6-4.

KG C were only able to manage another 3-7 loss when they hosted Queens E this week. George Freeman led the way for Queens, winning all of his matches. KG’s Matt Wilson continued to impress as he beat first the tricky Robin Burns over a hard-fought 5 games and then Mick Buley.

The Basingstoke Hindu Society A team were also in action twice this week, this time playing host to their B team, in which they gave a good demonstration of the gulf between the top and bottom of the division, comfortably winning 10-0.
