Press Report #7
Sunday 8th November 2009

In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, Alpha Cars brought KG A’s unbeaten run to a crashing stop as they raced to a 10-0 win over their visitors. In the first match of the evening, KG’s Tony Amies came back strong in his fourth games against Alpha Cars’ Terry White, but White regained the initiative in the decider winning 11-7. Thereafter, it was a fairly one-sided affair, with White and team mates Paul Rattue and Kevin Macken making light work of the opposition.

In their first of two appearances this week, a Hannington side of Steve Rollason, Tony Brown and Paul Robinson hosted an Oakley A side of Jason White, Dave Smith and Sarah Whithorn. The home team comfortably won all but two matches 3-0. Smith narrowly lost out 3-2 to Robinson, and team mate Whithorn tirelessly battled against Rollason in a very close match, finally winning 2-3. Final result 9-1 to Hannington.

Hannington’s 2nd appearance of the week didn’t go so well though. This time they were up against the unbeaten, top of the table St Peter’s A team of Sean Pickin, Pete Matthews and James Wright who happily dished out a 10-0 drubbing to their visitors.

Meanwhile, St Peters B team suffered another 0-10 defeat, this time at home to Winklebury. Simon Kiefer and Steve Armstrong both produced a glimmer of hope for St Peter’s as they took a game off Hannington’s John Golding, but in both cases any hopes were dashed as Golding regained the upper hand and won both matches by 1 game to 3. Golding’s team mates Malcolm Cummins and Colin Wilkes had no such problems with the opposition and posted 0-3 wins over each of their opponents.

In an action packed match, Minitec B triumphed 7-3 over the Queens B side of Keith Dickenson, Denise Weller and Pete Martin. Minitec’s Norman Swift was the only unbeaten player on the night, although was pushed hard in all three of his matches, especially by Dickenson who won their 3rd and 4th games to force the decider. Weller got off to a good start over Minitec’s Gary Livingstone, winning the 1st and 2nd games. However, Livingstone then found a response to the Weller attack and took the next three games and the match.

In Division 2, the AWE team lost 2-8 to Portals, but it was a good night for AWE’s Ken Wyld who defeated first Peter Blunden and then Gary Walters. Wyld and Steve Jones also came close to winning their doubles match against Blunden and Walters, winning the 1st and 2nd games, only to lose the next 3. The only unbeaten player on the night was Portals’ Avril Waters.

There were some notable successes for Basingstoke’s junior players this week. Oakley B junior Jamie Cole notched up two fine wins as his team took on the unbeaten Basingstoke Hindu Society A team, beating both Mohak Dalesh and Kanti Mistri. Sav Thevendria was again unbeaten, helping his side to a 7-3 win.

KG D junior Holly Edwards scored her first wins in the league as she defeated KG C’s Alan Wilson and assisted team mate Mike Wood to pick up a well deserved doubles win too. And in the same match, KG C junior Matthew Wilson took the scalp of Wood. KG D’s Dave Partridge scored a useful treble to take his side to a 3-7 victory.

Frank Lii is proving to be a useful addition to the Queens C strength, beating both Celia Hooker and Bill Bavister of Queens D this week. The D team’s Nigel Cooper was too strong for the opposition though and scored a treble to give his side a 7-3 win.

A KG F team of Graham Howland with juniors Charlie Morrison and Tristan Noon suffered a heavy 0-10 defeat at the hands of Queens E. The longest game of the season so far was the 3rd game between Noon and Queens’ George Hellens, which Hellens eventually won 17-19.
