Press Report #8 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, the KG A team of Dave Kimberley, Tony Amies and Patrick Garlick bounced back from last week’s 10-0 defeat from St Peters A team, by dishing out a 10-0 defeat to St Peters B. St Peters A team had another comfortable 0-10 win over host team Queens B, with every match being won 0-3 apart from Peter Martin vs James Wright and Keith Dickensen vs Peter Matthews when the home side managed to take a game, only to lose out 1-3. A very dusty floor made Oakley A’s match against Alpha Cars particularly challenging, with at least one player choosing to play bare foot. The conditions didn’t stop Paul Rattue from notching up a treble though. The last match of the evening was a father and son affair, with Jason White taking on dad Terry. Jason was just able to take the first 2 games, but Terry rallied to win the next 2 games 10-12, to force the decider which went Jason’s way. The Minitec A team of Steve Murgatroyd, Jonathan Evans and Andrew Parker hosted the Queens A side of Tony Palaczky, Alan Palaczky and Louis Webb. Despite a spirited performance, the Minitec team were not able to beat Tony, but Evans did succeed in beating Alan. The Palaczky brothers also paired up to win the doubles match to give them a final score of 4-6. Winklebury were neck and neck with visitors Minitec B when they met this week. Minitec’s Gary Livingstone toiled long and hard against both John Golding and Colin Wilkes but was unlucky not to come away with any points, in both cases losing out narrowly in the deciding game. Some inspired play from both sides, including a nail-biting 20-18 game between Wilkes and Ian Short, made for a very exciting evening and both teams went away well pleased with the 5-5 draw. In Division 2, the KG F team of Martyn Richards, Graham Howland and Tristan Noon achieved their first win of the season as they defeated hosts Basingstoke Hindu Society B by 2 games to 8. Richards and Noon both scored a maximum, while Howland notched up his first win in the league as did the Hindu Society’s Jitu Patel. KG C’s Matthew Wilson lead a one-man charge when his side took on Oakley B, winning all 3 of his matches against Teri Allison, Jamie Cole and Ian Warner. The Oakley side had the better of KG’s Alan Wilson and Tristan Noon though and, although Noon stretched his opponents in three very tight matches, Oakley took all the remaining points for a healthy 7-3 home win. RAF Odiham’s Steve Preston scored a fine treble when his side visited KG D this week. Preston’s team mate Paul Frazer had very tight matches against KG’s Mike Wood and Dave Partridge but managed to hold the decider in both matches to score a useful 2 points although he was beaten by KG’s Josh Manson. Queens C started off on the right foot when they hosted Basingstoke Hindu Society A with Peter Coppins taking first blood over Kanti Mistry in a match played over 5 games that all went to a tie break. However, things went down hill for the home side after that with the remaining matches all going in favour of the visitors. Queens’ Keith Cutmore looked like he might stop the rot as he rallied from a 3-11 first game defeat at the hands of Mistry winning the 2nd and 4th games. Unfortunately for Queens he was unable to clinch the last game which went to Mistry 10-12 to give the away side a 1-9 win.
The Portals team of Peter, Steve and John Blunden were unlucky to come away with only 2 points when they took on Queens D side of Lorainne Mortimer, Celia Hooker and Nigel Cooper this week. Peter Blunden was able to beat both Hooker and Mortimer, but Cooper was too strong for the home side and scored another fine treble to help his side to a 2-8 win.
