Press Report #9 In Division 1 of the Basingstoke Table Tennis league, the Queens A side of Tony Palaczky, Alan Palaczky and Louis Webb hosted KG B this week and Webb was unlucky not to record his first win of the season. Having won the 2nd and 3rd games in his match against the experienced Phil Ware, Webb lost the 4th, only to rebound in the 5th, but he was unable to make it stick and Ware closed out the decider 12-14. The match between Tony Palaczky and KG’s Roger Bielby turned out to be an exciting battle of wills, with neither wanting to give an inch. Palaczky eventually won the match by taking the decider 11-9. Both Palaczky brothers notched up three points each, as well as sharing in a doubles win for a 7-3 overall result. Win big or lose big - there are no half measures for KG A team at the moment. This week, Dave Kimberley, Tony Amies and Sue Tompsett crashed to a 9-1 defeat at the hands of the Minitec B team of Louis Conlon, Gary Livingstone and Norman Swift. Amies scored KG’s only point of the evening by defeating Livingstone and it looked like he might salvage another point for his side in the last match of the evening against Conlon, but having gone two games up, he lost the next three to give Conlon the win. A two-man Minitec A team of Steve Murgatroyd and Andrew Parker was lucky to salvage a draw from their disadvantaged start against Hannington. Murgatroyd in particular pulled out all the stops to score a vital treble including an outstanding win over Hannington’s Tony Brown. In Division 2, KG E recorded their 2nd win of the season, this time over Basingstoke Hindu Society B. KG E started off badly, with captain David MacDonald losing out to Jitu Patel, but thereafter it was plain sailing for the home team. KG’s Zoe Blagborough showed that she is improving all the time, holding her nerve even when pushed hard by both Patel and Dipan Lakhani to win her first maximum in the league. Peter Millie also scored a maximum, while Blagborough and MacDonald teamed up to win the doubles for a 9-1 victory. The KG F team of Martyn Richards, Charlie Morrison and Tristan Noon achieved their second consecutive win as they defeated the KG D team by 6 games to 4. Richards scored a healthy treble, supported by one point each from juniors Morrison and Noon. Another fine performance from KG C’s Matthew Wilson helped his side to achieve a draw against the Queens C team of Peter Coppins, Keith Cutmore and Frank Lii. Wilson took all three points available to him while team mate Martyn Richards added another two, beating both Coppins and Cutmore but narrowly losing to Lii in the decider. The mighty Basingstoke Hindu Society A team of Mohak Dalesh, Paritosh Singh and Sav Thevendria continued their unbeaten run in the 2nd division, comfortably beating Portals 9-1. Portals’ sole point was scored by Steve Redstall who lightened an otherwise dark evening for his side.
