Press Report - Closed
Chapionship Sean Pickin won the Basingstoke Singles Table Tennis title at the recent BDTTL Closed Championship, defeating Norman Swift in an intense, full-throttle final, winning by 3 sets to 1. Both players had been in superb form during the Championship and the no holds barred clash did not disappoint the 40+ spectators. Swift had earlier in the evening picked up the Handicap Singles event overpowering Terry White in a 1 set, 31-up, showdown, winning 31-14. White had been unlucky earlier to lose out in the Super-Vets final to Nigel Cooper by the narrowest of margins, with Cooper clinching the vital points winning 10-12, 11-9, 11-9. Two BDTTL newcomers this season, Steve Ng and Paritosh Singh, battled out what was arguably the most competitive final of the evening in the Div 2 Singles, with Singh coming from behind to clinch an epic final 5th set in deuce, 13-11. Sarah Whithorn retained her Ladies Singles crown with a 4 set victory over Sue Tompsett. Whithorn had lost in an earlier group match, but found top form in the final containing the fast attacking play of Tompsett with a fantastic display of defensive table tennis. The Junior Singles final was between two of Basingstoke’s rapidly improving youths, with Louis Webb and Jamie Cole putting on a marvellous exhibition of uninhibited table tennis. Webb came back from losing the first set to take the next 3 and the match. Webb and Cole then faced each other again the Junior Doubles final, paired with Matthew Palaczky and Tristan Noon respectively. Another great match enjoyed by all with Webb and Palaczky eventually defeating Cole and Noon in 4 very close sets. Sean Pickin picked up his 2nd title of the evening, retaining the Vets Singles with an emphatic 3 set victory over Ian Short, who had the distinction of defeating two of Basingstoke’s top vets, Tony Palaczky and Paul Rattue en route to the final. The Div 1 Singles was a classic toe-to-toe contest between Steve Murgatroyd and Norman Swift. It was lightning fast with some spectacular shot-making, Murgatroyd finally winning the 5th and final set 11-8. Sav Thevendria upset the form book in the 18-40’s Singles, defeating one of Basingstoke’s top players James Wright in the final. Despite losing the first set, Thevendria turned things around and went on to claim a very creditable 4 set victory. Paul Rattue continued his domination in the Mini-Bat Singles retaining the trophy with a straight sets victory over the luckless Steve Murgatroyd. Rattue has made this event his own in recent years and his accuracy with a bat not much larger than the size of a lollipop is unnerving for most of his opponents. Sean Pickin, continued his dominance at the Closed Championship winning his 3rd and 4th titles in the Open Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Pickin first teamed up with Peter Matthews in a surprisingly one-sided 3 set victory over Tony Palaczky and Alan Palaczky. He then paired up with Terri Allison, their contrasting styles combing superbly, to defeat, in 4 sets, Patrick and Garlick and Sue Tompsett, who for the second year in a row ended as Mixed Doubles runners-up. An evening of tremendous table tennis was enjoyed by an appreciative audience, with thanks from BDTTL to Basingstoke Rugby for hosting the event again this season.
